PEAS PAYASAM / MUTTAR KHEER

Peas Payasam

This recipe was adapted from Sanjeev Kapoor's book of Indian recipes. Making anything out of Green peas is definitely something weird for kids. So please do not tell your kids that the main constituent in this kheer is green peas ;-)

Ingredients :
1 cup Green peas
1/2 cup ghee (clarified butter)
1 1/4 litres milk
1 cup sugar
1 tsp cardamom powder / elaichi powder
20-25 almonds , soaked and skin removed

Method :
Boil the green peas for five minutes. Refresh it in cold water and grind it to a smooth paste. Grind the soaked almonds. Heat ghee in a heavy bottomed pan and saute the green peas paste and almond paste till the raw smell goes away. Meanwhile boil the milk and add the green peas-almond mixture to it . Bring it to a boil and cook on a slow flame for about 20 minutes. Add sugar, and cardamom powder. Cook for a further 10 minutes and then switch off the gas. Serve the kheer chilled. You may decorate or garnish with toasted sliced almonds.
